Public sculpture project
Rainbow Harbor is located next to the Aquarium of the Pacific, and has 87 slips for commercial and recreational vessels. I picked this area to be the location of my sculpture since it is the first place I visited in Long Beach. I think it is one of the popular places in Long Beach: However, it needs to have some new and attractive spots to attract tourists and local residences. When I visited the Rainbow Harbor again recently, I realized that the public space is a little bit empty that makes the whole harbor loos dark in the night. Therefore, I decide to design a sculpture and put it in front of the Aquarium of Pacific. The sculpture includes the main symbolic elements of Long Beach – ocean, Queen Mary, aquarium and the wheel in the Pike. My design of the waves for the sculpture inspired by the shape of the aquarium building. They represent the beach and aquarium at the same time. I used to put a whale tail to be a symbol of the aquarium but I remember a professor said if you put something on a logo or sculpture for a museum, some people might expect they can see this thing at there. So I ends up putting a shake’s tail rather than a whale. The material of the sculpture will be similar to the 3D printed. It is going to be some transparency material that can looks shinny under sun light. There are some LED light in the sculpture so it can glow in the night. The LED light will change colors to make the sculpture unique in the night.
